Good bye General Westmoreland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the press on July 18th, 2005, General Williams Childs Westmoreland, Former Commanding General of Allied Forces in Vietnam has passed away in natural cause, in South Carolina, at the age 91.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the critical situation of the war in Vietnam, General Westmoreland has been assigned to a position of Commanding General of Allied Forces. At that time with a great effort, he had a strong decision to solve the war within a short period.  Somehow, his plans have been blocked by a political decision from Washington, D.C.  Later on, he has been transferred back to the States with his last position as Chief of Joint General Chief of Staff before he retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his point of view about the Vietnam War, General Westmoreland always said: “We are not losing in Vietnam, but we never kept our promises with our ally, the Army Republic of Vietnam.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the celebration to memorize the ARVN’s day in New Orleans in 1987, he said upfront of thousand American and Vietnamese veterans: “On behalf of the United States Armed Forces, I would like to apologize to the veterans of the South Vietnamese Armed Forces for abandoning you guys”<\/em>. Thousand South Vietnamese and American veterans were crying of his sincere apologize in the Auditorium Convention Center.  During the ceremony we gave him a full military salutation to appreciate and give high respect to a former General who was a former ally of the ARVN until its last minute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer 1987,  represented the Association of the former ARVN’s Soldiers overseas, we organized the Day in New Orleans, in the remembrance of ARVN.  We invited the honorable lady Westmoreland and the General, and a number of Vietnamese and American generals.  Some of them have accepted the invitation, and some of them could not join us.  The presence of General Westmoreland during the ceremony has been cited as his admiration to the Spirit of Fighting of ARVN Forces during the war.  From the friendly conversation with him and his lovely wife, General Westmoreland has also expressed about his opposition to the Political Strategy of the American Government.  He also expressed deep emotions about the death in South Vietnam in April 1975 with a high emotional.  He reminisced the old time during his service in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the mid of 1990, he strongly rejected the invite from an American TV corporate to come to Vietnam to discuss about the Vietnam War with the former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and two former Communist Generals whom are Vo Nguyen Giap and Van Tien Dung. The main reason was General Westmoreland did not want to betray his former alley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are very sorry of the loss of the General.  We met a number of times with General and Mrs. “Kristy”.  We always respect his personality, his loyalty and his morality.  General Westmoreland was a sincere and open mind person.  We were privileged to attend to his 80th birthday in 1994, and to meet him again at Long Beach, California,  General Westmoreland was always excited to meet with the former ARVN’s soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on the family wish, the funeral of General Westmoreland will be held with a full military ceremony on Monday the 25th of July, 2005 at West Point Military Academy, the place where he started his military career, and will lay rest in peace in the same place next to some famous American Generals as Formal Marshall Mac Arthur, former General Patton, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 For him the war was over, a career has gone, and another page of history has turn over with a lot of souvenirs of the past or after the war time. The Republic of  Vietnam has lost a good companion, a free warrior, and a loyal ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were so sorry for the loss of General Williams Child Westmoreland.  May God bless his soul, and rest in peace with others free warriors who left before.  We expect that the Vietnamese Community of Overseas will never forget our loyal friend, a courageous soldier never been afraid of any political pressures, although a warrior of the free world always stays side by side with the Republic of Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
